Flesh and Spirit

Self Denial by Jobin Daniel

“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit” 1 Corinthians 2:14

Jesus fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. Most people are not able to go for so long. The first time I fasted, I ate nothing for 2 days, and I almost fainted. Whats the difference. How is Jesus’ body able to withstand 40 days of no food, while I fainted on my 2nd day.

All of us have 2 things keeping us alive and functioning in this earth. The flesh, and the spirit. Both exist at the same time. But to some, one part is much stronger than the other. And its obvious which one is stronger based on how well you can perform with the absence of the other. Jesus had a strong spirit, so he was able to withstand the effects of fatigue when he starved his flesh. When I fasted, it was apparent that I have been relying on my flesh and have been feeding only my flesh.

You can tell how well a person has trained their dominant hand in writing by looking at how well their handwriting is. If you ask them to give up their dominant hand, and to write with their non-dominant hand. You’ll see a big difference. They have barely trained their left hand to write properly and they struggle a lot.

Our spirit and our flesh are both needed on this earth. But it isn’t good to only give attention to the flesh and neglect the spirit. Jesus actively calls us to deny our fleshly desires.
